A steering head, a chain of segments that follows it, and a travelling wave down the body. They lay chemical trails, smell each other's, and school.

Row: the species doing the smelling. Column: the ink it smells. Positive climbs the gradient, negative flees it. Nothing forces the matrix to be symmetric — that asymmetry is what keeps things moving, since reciprocal affinities just settle into clumps.

Coasting steer

Speed is not a setting — it comes out of amplitude × frequency × thrust. Wave onset sets where along the body the wave starts: near 0 only the tail beats (tuna), near 1 the whole body ripples (eel). Coasting steer is how much a stalled woim can still turn.

Neighbour cap

Neighbours come from a spatial grid whose cells are sized to the cohesion radius. The cap bounds how many each woim examines per cell, which is what makes the cost independent of population — a large cohesion radius makes cells coarse, so shrink it as you scale up.
